Golf Practice Mats

Golf practice mats can vary greatly in price.  As with most things in life you certainly get what you pay for.  The important thing to consider is the realistic amount of use that a mat will get.  If you are going to be the only user of the mat and are a fairly competent player then a personal type golf practice mat should suffice.

However, if you have a golf range or shop with a club test bay then commercial golf practice mats are definitely a worthwhile investment.  Anything less would be a false economy as the less durable type would need replacing, due to wear and tear much more frequently.

That said, if a mat receives an incorrect chopping type blow from an iron, as opposed to a wood, it can tear no matter how high its quality.  With this in mind it is always worth keeping a watchful eye on players using any commercial practice facility.

So what are the differences between personal and commercial golf practice mats?  Basically, commercial mats have a thicker rubber backing and also a much denser nylon pile. This helps resist tears and curling.  They are also more resistant to extreme weather with the use of water-repelling adhesives and sun protecting ultra-violet treatments.

One other important factor when choosing a golf practice mat is size.  If you are a golfer over 5' 6" and intend to use a driver then you should select a mat that is at least 4 feet x 5 feet.  This is because with the driver you have the largest swing arc of any club and are in danger of catching the front edge of the mat during the swing.
